exhibition_

The Veerkracht sustainable platform presented their first exhibition at Fashion in Helsinki in June 2022. During covid pandemic, the platform began working in creative dialogue and collaboration between Europe’s leading denim hub Amsterdam, London, and other European cities. The team includes Finnish and British designers and artists and 4 young Dutch denim talents who have worked closely with the curator Jani Kaila and denim sustainability specialist Maarten Wentholt.

The exhibition presents different approaches to sustainable treatments, nature positive denim solutions, biodegradability, natural dyeing techniques, upcycling, and industrial processes using less water, energy, and harmful chemicals.

The Veerkracht exhibition showcased sustainable denim fabrics and garments, large-scale denim sculptures, art installations and fine art denim pieces. The team presented the results from experimental biospheric FashionLabs set up in four biodiversities in Sahara, Veneto, Amsterdam and Turku Archipelago. The participants have worked with denim, which has been treated with soil and water enzymes and regenerative natural forces. Special results have also been achieved with oxidation and rusting processes.

The innovative sustainable industrial collaboration with eco-friendly and certified natural mineral pigments has taken place at Zaitexfashion laboratories in Veneto, Italy.

feedback_

Raising awareness, making people think.
The nature positive concept was well received by the visitors. We got a lot of positive feedback about us providing so many positive solutions and alternatives to the current more harmful and polluting ways of producing denim garments and art works. The in-depth conversations with media also resulted in the journalists voicing their own problematic position of being confused by brands and retailers greenwashing and obscuring the sustainability communications. The media representatives feel being used and manipulated and the issues around sustainability in the textile industry are muddled, unclear and confusing. The Veerkracht team putting nature clearly in focus and working with nature and finding nature positive solutions felt like fresh air for them.

Enjoyable Atmosphere and Friendly Experience. Our exhibition provided the multidisciplinary experience of art, mixed installations and a variety of denim garments, fashion and jewellery in one space, which was appreciated by the visitors in Kämp Galleria. The space design worked well, and by using natural materials like real vintage hay poles from a Finnish farm and natural rope for hanging structures, we created an atmosphere where people took their time to read the information texts and stories behind the items. People loved the rhythm of the displays and colours and the visitors were also encouraged to touch the materials and garments. The friendly approach generated long conversations, which we might have missed otherwise. The visitors who stayed longer in the gallery were also offered hand made ice creams and Italian wines.
